What Is a DCT Gearbox? Understanding Dual Clutch Technology at CMH GWM Pinetown

Have you been searching for your next automatic car and noticed some labelled as DCT? Ever wondered what that means? At CMH GWM Pinetown, we’re here to clear it up.

Today, we’re taking a closer look at our very own Haval H6 GT found at CMH GWM Pinetown, which comes equipped with a 7-speed DCT gearbox.

What is a DCT gearbox?
DCT stands for Dual Clutch Transmission. Like a traditional automatic, it doesn’t require a driver-operated clutch. Instead, you use a gear selector to place the car into Drive, Neutral, Reverse, or Park.

How does a traditional automatic gearbox work?

  • A traditional automatic uses a torque converter to disengage the transmission from the engine. This acts like a clutch, allowing the car to idle without stalling.
  • Inside the gearbox are clutch packs. A pressurised hydraulic system activates these packs to engage different gear combinations.
  • Modern electronics and sensors then decide the appropriate gear based on speed, load, and driver input.

How does a DCT gearbox work?

  • A DCT uses two clutches: one for odd-numbered gears (1, 3, 5, 7) and one for even-numbered gears (2, 4, 6).
  • While one gear is engaged, the second clutch is already pre-selecting the next gear.
  • An electronic control unit (ECU) switches between the clutches, delivering lightning-fast gear changes.
  • Because there’s no torque converter, shifts feel direct, smooth, and performance-oriented.

Advantages of a DCT over a traditional automatic

  • Fuel efficiency: DCTs are generally more economical.
  • Performance: Faster, seamless gear changes mean better acceleration and responsiveness.
  • Driving experience: A sportier feel compared to the relaxed comfort of a torque converter automatic.
