8 Tips for Jump-Starting a Vehicle with a Battery Booster Pack

Jump-starting a vehicle is often a hassle. It can be a great plan to keep a battery booster pack in your vehicle. That way, you can jump-start your car even if you can’t get another vehicle to help you.

Before you proceed, make sure:

The vehicle battery is not damaged or leaking.
You remove any metal accessories and dangling clothing like a tie or scarf.

8 steps to using a vehicle battery booster:

Check the battery booster

Keep the booster packs fully charged.
Put the battery booster pack somewhere stable, away from the engine.

Connect the red jump lead

Connect the red positive (+) booster pack jump lead to the positive (+) battery terminal.

Connect the black jump lead

Connect the black negative (-) jump lead to an earthing point on your vehicle. Unpainted metal on the engine block or VIN is the best.

Switch on the pack

Switch on the booster pack once the battery packs are connected.

Try to start the vehicle

Proceed to turn on the key in the ignition.
If it does not start after a few tries, there’s probably an underlying problem that needs attention.

Let the engine run

If the vehicle starts, keep the engine running for about five minutes.
After five minutes, switch off the booster and allow the engine to run for five to ten minutes.

Turn off and disconnect

Turn off the engine.
Disconnect the leads in the reverse order of how you placed them.

Restart your vehicle

Try turning the keys in the ignition to see if the car starts again.

What to do after you’ve jump-started your vehicle

If you’ve managed to jump-start your vehicle, keep the engine running to charge the battery.

Charge the engine by driving (not in stop-start traffic) for at least thirty minutes. You can also use a portable vehicle battery charger to top up the charger on your battery.

How often should you change a vehicle battery?

On average, batteries last between 5 and 7 years, but you should only consider changing a vehicle battery when it’s showing signs of worsening. If the battery is more than five years old and seems like it’s struggling to start the car, get it checked out.
