There is a lot of commitment involved in buying a new car. The ownership of a vehicle involves regular maintenance. It is possible to depend on towing services most of the time. However, there are still instances when a few minor issues here and there can save you a lot of time and money. Check out the 5 essentials every car owner should have:
#The vehicle Owner’s Manual
It is the most basic and underappreciated asset of your car that can help you in an emergency. The owner’s manual is generally kept in the glove compartment and contains all the information about everything in your vehicle. For example, you can read about the required tyre pressure or recommended fuel levels. In short, it is a driver’s best friend for troubleshooting or maintenance-related advice about your vehicle. For every vehicle that is delivered at CMH Haval Pinetown, the owner’s manual is explained.
#First Aid KitA first aid kit is an inexpensive item that every car owner should have in their vehicle. Accidents can happen anytime, and real danger might be just around the corner. You might end up in a difficult situation in a remote area, and that’s when the first aid kit is the only medical help you can get. For passengers travelling on long routes with little connectivity, it can be a lifesaver. So, it’s highly recommended that you keep a first aid kit in your vehicle containing all the basic medicines and bandages.
#A Spare Tyre with a jack and spanner
A flat tyre is probably the most common issue you will face as a car owner. The funny thing is that it usually happens when you least expect it. You need to always have a spare tyre in your car as it saves a lot of time. You will also need compatible tools to replace your flat tyre. A spanner and a jack are convenient and valuable items that you can rely on when replacing your flat tyre.
#Jumper Cables
A dead car is never a pretty sight and causes a lot of frustration for travellers. Your vehicle could die in the winter season or when the battery weakens to a point where the car cannot start. In such a situation, you need jumper cables that help to kickstart your battery. You will not need to head to the repair shop if you have someone who has a car battery near you. These jumper cables are used to charge one battery through another.
#A Bottle of Windshield Wiper FluidWindshield wiper fluid is a very underrated item that most people neglect. When you drive in cold weather or under foggy conditions, your visibility diminishes, and it is almost always bleak. There are high chances of accidents if you can’t see clearly. You should invest in a high-quality windshield wiper fluid and always keep your visibility clear. You can purchase one at CMH Haval Pinetown’s workshop.
You can also keep other items in your car, like your phone charger, blankets, and a flashlight. You can keep the things you feel would help you in your journey, as they can prove helpful at times.

Turn the wheel wrench anti-clockwise and loosen the nuts to the point where they can be turned by hand (be warned – they may be tough to loosen).
However, don’t remove them completely yet.
4. Jack the car up
All cars have dedicated jacking points – consult your handbook to see where these are.
Aim to position the jack at the side of the car, close to the punctured wheel.
Placing a small plank of wood under the jack will help keep it stable.
Raise the car slowly until the flat tyre is 10-15cm off the ground.
5. Take out the flat tyre
Fully loosen and remove the wheel nuts, then gently pull the tyre towards you until it comes free.
Place it flat on the ground.
6. Mount the spare wheel
Slide the spare wheel onto the protruding hub bolts, or in line with the wheel nut slots (warning: it’s heavy to lift it off the ground to do this).
Replace the wheel nuts and tighten them by hand.
7. Lower the car and tighten the bolts
Use the jack to drop the car down slightly, so that the spare tyre is in contact with the ground.
Now use the wrench to fully tighten the wheel nuts.
8. Fully lower the car
Bring the car fully down to earth and remove the jack.
Consider giving the wheel nuts a final check for tightness.
Stow the jack and the other tyre in the boot, along with the rest of your equipment.
Note: if your car has a space saver, the old wheel will take up more space in the boot.
9. Check the spare tyre pressure
If you have one, use a tyre pressure gauge to check the spare wheel is fully inflated.
Alternatively, drive carefully to a petrol station and use the gauge there.
Pump up the tyre to the recommended pressure – as detailed in the handbook – if necessary.
10. Take your punctured tyre for repair
Visit a garage or tyre fitters at the first opportunity and give them your punctured wheel.
They will advise whether to repair or replace it.
Don’t drive on a space-saver spare wheel for longer than is strictly necessary – they are only intended for emergencies.
