It’s been a little over a month since the initial launch of the P-Series and the excitement is still growing. The P-series is GWM’s latest offering to the bakkie market which is fiercely contested. It has the looks, features and its pricing is undoubtedly going to appeal to many South Africans But just how good is the P-series? To answer, we turned to veteran motoring TV and Radio presenter to answer some of our questions. 1.) Now that you have seen the P-Series, what was your first impression? First impressions. I like the size of the vehicle, commanding presence and is a good-looking vehicle…but there again it’s a personal choice. 2.) Given your experience with all thing’s vehicles, do you think the P-Series is serious competitor in bakkie market in SA? Is it a serious competitor??? We need to remember that the South African bakkie driver is very brand loyal, so for the P series to be competitive it has to offer a whole lot more at a very affordable price. I am happy to say that it comes pretty close with all its features. It is priced to sell. As a work horse bakkie we need to see the numbers increase on the road. 3.) What did you think of the features and ride of the P-Series? It is a great ride on the road, and I will not comment on its off-road capabilities as I did not try it under those conditions. 4.) Is there anything that you could say GWM could improve on with the P-Series? Very disappointed with its power plant. Quite slow on pull away. Needs a bigger and more powerful engine. 5.) With the GWM logo only visible on the tailgate, the new badging on the grill in the shape of a ‘P’ is inspired by power of heaven and earth. The super symbol ‘P” has three core implications. Power, Peak and Perfection.

Officially the name of the new pickup was announced as POER (pronounced as power), In South Africa it will be known as the GWM P Series bakkie.

The P Series offers space, comfort, performance, safety, technology and reliability. With increased interior and exterior dimensions the all new 2,0 TD engine is fitted with Variable Vortex Intake Manifold for more torque and power. The bin offers a hidden step ladder in the tailgate making loading and unloading effortless.

With modern technology, the windows and windscreen features 98% ultraviolet filtration. The cabin features crafted and wrapped full leather interiors. The P Series offers personalized intelligent interconnectivity, voice-controlled entertainment, self-adaptive cruise control and smart cruise control support, multi-function seats, rear self-tensioning seatbelts in the double cab.

The P series is packed with safety features such as, Lane-keeping assistance, Traffic sign recognition, blind spot monitoring, front armoured double layer steel beams for strength and rigidity, front and rear PDC with rear camera on double cab derivatives, and up to 7 airbags.

The key focus was driving pleasure and comfort. Keyless entry is standard. 4X4 models feature ESP, intelligent 2 speed TOD (torque on demand) 4 wheel drive systems and diff lock as standard.

In South Africa the P Series will be available in 16 derivatives.

Ranging from Single cab base models, 4X2 Turbo diesel and 4X4 manual transmissions, all the way to Double cab 4X2 turbo diesel manual and automatic transmissions to, 4X4 turbo diesel manual and automatic transmission.
