How to Change a Tyre

Experiencing a tyre blowout can be scary – you need to make sure you are in a safe place and a calm state before following our advice on how to change a tyre. What equipment do you need? Apart from the spare wheel, you will need the following: *Wheel Spanner – for taking out the wheel nuts *Jack – for lifting the car up *Wheel chock – to stop the car from rolling when jacked up *Wheel nut key – if locking nuts are fitted *Car handbook – for reference You can also carry: *Torch – (check batteries regularly) *Gloves – wheels will be dirty *Reflective jacket – to make you visible *Warning triangle – to alert other drivers to a hazard/obstruction *Short plank of wood – as a flat surface to steady the jack *Tyre pressure gauge – for checking the new tyre is fully inflated 1. Prepare the car Apply the handbrake and remove all passengers from the car. Take the spare wheel and necessary tools out of the boot. 2. Position the wheel chocks/bricks Shocks prevent the car from rolling while jacked up. Position a chock on the opposite wheel to the one with a puncture. For example, if your left-front tyre has a puncture, put a chock behind the right-rear wheel. If your left-rear tyre is flat, you need a chock in front of the right-front. Use chocks for both front/rear wheels (as appropriate) if you have them. Bricks or large rocks can do the same job if you don’t have a dedicated chock. 3. Loosen the wheel nuts It’s easier – and safer – to do this while the car is on the ground. You may need to lever off a plastic wheel trim first. CMH Haval Pinetown How to Change a Tyre Turn the wheel wrench anti-clockwise and loosen the nuts to the point where they can be turned by hand (be warned – they may be tough to loosen). However, don’t remove them completely yet. 4. Jack the car up All cars have dedicated jacking points – consult your handbook to see where these are. Aim to position the jack at the side of the car, close to the punctured wheel. Placing a small plank of wood under the jack will help keep it stable. Raise the car slowly until the flat tyre is 10-15cm off the ground. 5. Take out the flat tyre Fully loosen and remove the wheel nuts, then gently pull the tyre towards you until it comes free. Place it flat on the ground. 6. Mount the spare wheel Slide the spare wheel onto the protruding hub bolts, or in line with the wheel nut slots (warning: it’s heavy to lift it off the ground to do this). Replace the wheel nuts and tighten them by hand. 7. Lower the car and tighten the bolts Use the jack to drop the car down slightly, so that the spare tyre is in contact with the ground. Now use the wrench to fully tighten the wheel nuts. 8. Fully lower the car Bring the car fully down to earth and remove the jack. Consider giving the wheel nuts a final check for tightness. Stow the jack and the other tyre in the boot, along with the rest of your equipment. Note: if your car has a space saver, the old wheel will take up more space in the boot. 9. Check the spare tyre pressure If you have one, use a tyre pressure gauge to check the spare wheel is fully inflated. Alternatively, drive carefully to a petrol station and use the gauge there. Pump up the tyre to the recommended pressure – as detailed in the handbook – if necessary. 10. Take your punctured tyre for repair Visit a garage or tyre fitters at the first opportunity and give them your punctured wheel. They will advise whether to repair or replace it. Feeling flat? Here’s how to jumpstart a car with a battery booster pack

It can be a good idea to keep a car battery booster pack in your car. That way, you can jump start your battery even if you can’t get another car to help you.

Before you start, make sure:

  • The car battery doesn’t look damaged and isn’t leaking.
  • You’ve taken off any metal jewellery or watches and removed dangling clothing like a tie or scarf.

Steps to using a car battery booster

1. Check the battery booster
  • Make sure the packs fully charged
  • Put the battery booster pack somewhere stable. Don’t put it on the engine as it might fall off when the engine starts.

2. Connect the red jump lead
  • Connect the red positive (+) jump lead from the battery pack to the positive (+) terminal of the car battery.
3. Connect the black jump lead
  • Connect the black negative (-) jump lead to an earthing point on your car. Unpainted metal on the engine block or chassis is the best.
4. Switch on the pack
  • Once the battery packs connected, switch on the pack.

5. Try to start the car
  • Try to start your car by turning the key in the ignition.
  • If it doesn’t start after a few tries, there’s probably a more serious problem that needs help.
6. Let the engine run
  • If the car starts, keep the engine running for about 5 minutes.
  • After 5 minutes switch off the booster and allow the engine to run for a further 5 to 10 minutes.
7. Turn off and disconnect
  • Turn off the engine.
  • Remove the leads in the reverse order to how you placed them on (first disconnect the black lead, then the red lead).
8. Restart your car
  • Try turning the keys in the ignition to see if the car starts up again.
What to do after you’ve jump started your car

If you’ve managed to jump start your car, the engine will need to recharge again fully.

Charge the engine by driving normally (not in stop-start traffic) for at least 30 minutes. You can also use a portable car battery charger to top up the charger on your battery.

On average, batteries last between 5 and 7 years but you should only consider changing a car battery when it’s showing signs of deterioration.

Is your battery giving up?

Winter can seriously damage your car battery, especially if you park it outside. Avoid the sinking feeling of hearing nothing when you hit the ignition with a proactive check of your battery and charging system. Repair shops usually do not charge much to test your battery, many car parts stores will not even charge you a fee. If you find out your battery’s going out, you can replace it at a suitable time, instead of being at the point of whatever shop your deceased car is being towed to.

To improve aerodynamics and save petrol/diesel, today’s cars are equipped with higher detailed underbody panels and low-hanging front spoilers. When driving through heavy rain in the winter, you could end up ripping off the entire panel and possibly its mounting hardware. Check underneath the car, starting from the front, to see if any loose parts are hanging or flapping around before the ground gets too cold. You might be able to replace it or put it back in place. Cable ties or duct tape will do the trick.

Stop or at least slow corrosion

Vehicles resistance to corrosion has come a long way in the last couple of years. Take a good look at the car (ideally after a good wash) for any scratches or dings where you can see the bare metal under the paint. Paint should be applied to these. A professional repair is better, but if it’s out of your budget, you can do a quick fix yourself. Clean the area with some solvent (acetone or rubbing alcohol) and apply a clear coat of nail polish. You can even buy touch up paint in your car’s colour and it will work. When it comes to the prevention of rust on the underbody, keeping it clean is the best thing you can do. In addition, spray a few cans of Fluid Film on the metal parts of your underbody.

Keeping your headlights clean will make a difference in the darkness of winter. Here is an easy two-minute recommendation: Make sure the headlights are clean of dirt, rub car wax (any brand will do) on the lens, let it dry and buff it off, repeat. Also, do the taillights. The slippery surface you leave behind will be less likely to build up an ice coat when you are driving, it will make it easier to remove it if it does.

Don’t forget to check the pressure in your tyres weekly, to keep your fuel tank half full, and to protect your windshield wipers.

Haval has had quite a big year in South Africa. It has launched the popular Haval Jolion and their new shape flagship the Haval H6. Both vehicles have been built on a new Platform designed by Haval called L.E.M.O.N. a new lightweight build that was been praised by industry experts. But what is L.E.M.O.N. why is it such a big deal for the manufacturer?

From a manufacturer perspective building vehicles on a lighter platform has plenty of advantages. Lower deadweight means better driving range which is good in times where we are looking for ways to be more energy efficient. With the launch of the National VI Emission Standard by the Chinese government which aims to reduce carbon emissions, this new platform paves the way for Haval to achieve its goal of producing greener vehicles.

L.E.M.O.N. Structure

Additional benefits of the platform mean better performance from the engine. Acceleration will improve because the engine is not carrying as much weight. Braking will improve because the brake discs and pads will not work as hard to stop a lighter vehicle.

L.E.M.O.N. Mod

While all this sounds great the question now is how did Haval go about making their vehicles more lightweight? Haval made changes to the vehicle structure. GWM used an MDO (multidisciplinary design) approach to identify ways to arrange materials of the vehicle in the most effective way. Once the arrangement is done GWM then looks for lighter materials to build the vehicle and selects to put said materials in different places depending on the load conditions.

All this means Haval will be bringing greener, better performing, and safer vehicles to consumers soon. Right now, however, the only vehicles in South Africa using this platform are the Jolion and the H6.
